Sunday Snippet and Writing Life Update
Oct. 25th, 2020 12:44 pmOh look! A Sunday Snippet! Technically, it won’t be new. I had a week off from school this last week, and I intended to finish two WIPs (high school Untamed AU and fairy tale Guardian AU) I started this spring/summer. They’ve been languishing on AO3. I did not, in fact, get to them, and I’ve become increasingly unhappy with the state of them, so I deleted them both. I did, however, save the drafts because I think they both still have a lot of promise. So my new goal is to re-write them and post them when they’re complete instead of leaving them hanging. I’m especially committed to the Untamed story because I’ve attracted a vicious troll who hates the sangcheng ship and Nie Huaisang as a character. And then they started leaving transphobic, fatphobic comments and I’ll admit, it took some of my energy to face this, but it did not take my drive to write! I just need to make some better decisions about the arc of the story. I was thinking of re-doing it for NaNo, but I’m going to use my NaNo time to go through the Jiang Cheng Love Month prompts. I’ve found the 50 Kisses list (which I wrote about previously) as well as the Untamed Fall Fest 2020 prompts to be so helpful in keeping me motivated.
Speaking of UFF, here’s a little snippet of that project. I decided to write a modern wanxian/Wei Ying-focused slice of life fic (as is my complete jam). I’m not entirely satisfied with the characterizations. I like Wei Ying and Lan Zhan as characters, but there are some writers who just absolutely NAIL their voice, like
starandrea’s stunning Magical Marriage Ribbons series. I do not feel like I’ve achieved anything near as good, but I am having fun with it, so that’s alright. Anyway, here’s the snippet from chapter two of Home is a Fire.
Fatherhood has softened Wei Ying, because he doesn’t make a salacious comment about all the ways Jiang Cheng could acquire a son or needle him about his non-existent dating life. Instead he scoots closer to his brother and rests his head against his shoulder, close enough to kiss his son’s forehead.
“You could have something different, A-Cheng, if you want it. We would support you.”
Jiang Cheng snorts. “Yeah? Who’s we?”
“All of us,” Wei Ying says, his voice serious. “Your family, your friends.”
“My family?” Jiang Cheng tries to keep the bitterness from his voice as he says those words, but of course his brother notices and reaches for his hand.
“Yes, baby bro. Your family.”
Jiang Cheng squeezes Wei Ying’s hand. “This is good enough.”
