WFH Diaries

I hate WFH so much, y’all! I feel so ineffective and also like I’m not doing enough. But I’m teaching high school students who typically just need time to work. My British Lit class suffered the most this week because we’ve been reading a short story or essay per class (I teach 90 minute blocks) and having some banger discussions after each one. Last week we read the essay Words and Behavior by Aldous Huxley, and it was so interesting! It’s an essay about how the way we speak about war shapes our actions with regards to it, but the premise has many other applications. In our discussion, we talked about the way we see Huxley’s premise in action in our lives today. So good! Well, I am grateful we only had four days out this time around. Fingers crossed we can make it to the end of the school year in person.

The other classes are working on self-directed research, a novel unit, and yet more research, so I just sat around. I could have graded. I need to mark a few papers. But I find it so hard to focus in general and even more so when I’m alone. On Tuesday, I had the distraction of getting my second vaccine shot. On Wednesday and Thursday it snowed, so I was glad to be warm in my apartment. I cleaned my bedroom and my desk, stitched, and watched Midsomer Murders. I haven’t left my apartment since Tuesday afternoon, and tbh, I’m going stir crazy, so after school is done today, I’m going to make a quick run to the grocery store.

The sad thing is, I didn’t even make good use of my time at home. I did clean up my room, which needed dusting. I did my laundry. I’ve kept up on the dishes, but there’s just so much more I *could* do that I didn’t. Or probably *should* do but can’t. I swear my brain is absolute Swiss cheese. I’m trying to read a little bit. I’ve had these manga, I See the Sunspot, since last summer, plus I started reading The Iron Will of Genie Lo a couple weeks ago.

I wish my concentration would come back. Although, it might have always been bad, but I had enough going on that I didn’t notice until now, when I have long periods of sustained stillness.

Anyway, here’s Wonderwall. And by Wonderwall, I mean photos of my cross stitch WIPs, 2021 temperature tracker projects. The tree will be for my mom, and it’s tracking the temps in my hometown. The quilt-looking one is for me, and it’s tracking the temps wherever I happen to be this year. So far, it’s freezing Minsk.
