Teaching Diary 13: Screaming
Apr. 15th, 2021 08:50 amOkay, okay, first of all, I'm not going to scream too much because it ends up turning into a negative feedback loop in my head. And I'm not going to give a ton of specific context because you're all aware of the World and The Way Things Are. For example, my home state legislature has made it illegal for organizations (aside from private businesses) to require masks. So, like, schools. And they are trying to add a penalty if organizations DO require masks. My best friend teaches in a small, rural district, and the school board just voted to make masks optional. The superintendent was told to "stop living in fear." [10 Minute Shriek Here] This, despite the fact that cases are once again on the rise in Idaho (and everywhere).
Hearing this, and the legislature axing money for teacher pay, and all the other garbage, makes me glad that my current position is pretty darn good.
But even Pretty Darn Good jobs have problems and stress. We have 10 weeks of school left, and there is so much to get through. And the Youths are being particularly Youthful lately. And just because I understand the roots of the behaviors happening does not make them that much easier to deal with. I'm afraid I got a little snippy and mean with some of the kiddos yesterday. Well, maybe not mean, but definitely snippy, and look, I'm human. I'm a pretty good teacher but I have limits.
Okay. Hopefully this will bleed off the bulk of my need to scream so I don't actually slip and say something awful to the kids. Spring Break is the week after next, and I'm going to sleep in and go to museums and clean my apartment. It's fine. It's good.
