It is Tuesday afternoon here in Hsinchu. I have now "met" all of my students. It's been super awkward doing all the intro stuff online. I know the kiddos are not using the class time to actually complete things like a baseline writing assessment. I texted the teacher whose classroom is next to mine to see if there was a responsible adult in the classroom with the kids -- one of the students said, "We don't need an adult! We're teens!" Looool. Johan, the teacher, said there was an adult but not a responsible one. So we'll just see what work, if any, gets done and let the kids handle the consequences.

I have already figured out who the teacher's pet is in my sophomore class, though, and bless her heart I am glad to have someone respond when I ask a question! I am also glad I bought a package of gold star stickers to bring with me. She deserves at least five.

Today is also my last day of full quarantine. Tomorrow starts my four-day "self-management" period. I can leave for short periods to go shopping or work a little. I'm not actually allowed to be in my classroom as this period is one of limited contact, but I might go into school on Thursday just to get a look at the place, do some paperwork, and all that. I'm not excited to go out into the heat and humidity, though. I have noticed that it's pretty windy here, so maybe that helps dry one off?

I don't have an apartment yet (YIKES), but the housing agent has been in contact with a couple of options. One is a studio and one has a little loft bedroom. The one with the loft is closer to school. I might end up buying a scooter because it doesn't seem like there is a bus stop closer than a 15-minute walk to school. Which is fine, but the humidity makes me so dang sweaty, and I hate coming in to work all gross and dripping. I never did really adjust to the humidity while in Shenzhen, nor in Minsk, although Minsk had more drastic seasonal changes so I didn't feel it the same in winter. It's really a shame that my hometown has the climate I love best -- high desert -- but literally everything else is not something I want in my life (jobs, social prospects, etc).

Anyway. The food in quarantine hasn't been too bad. I'm trying to be open-minded about it. I'm not entirely sure what everything is with each meal, but so far it's been fine. For lunch today, I had a noodle and dumpling soup and a side of what I think is okra. I tried one piece, and it was too slimy. I also got what I think is warm soy milk? Not a fan. It had kind of a gritty texture and a sweetness that reminded me of leftover cereal milk. Yesterday with lunch I had some sort of custard thing in what tasted like a black tea sauce? I actually ate all of that even though the custard's texture was not great. I am excited to try more delivery options so I don't have to cook once I do get an apartment.

That's all for now. I have a few more minutes of lunch break before my afternoon creative writing class.
