Taiwan Diary: Spring Break
Apr. 1st, 2024 11:01 amEven though our spring break was fucked up and split over two weeks, I'm happy to say that my mom got to come visit! She left this morning. She was here for just over a week. We got to see some really fun stuff and eat some tasty food. We went to my favorite Mexican restaurant twice, took in a concert at the National Concert Hall (by the Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial), walked around a lot, and also took time to really, really enjoy our hotel AC.
The trip was not without hiccups. My debit card number got stolen midway through, so I had to deal with that. And I had to work last Thursday and Friday, so when Mom was hanging out in my apartment on Friday after checking out of our VERY nice room at the Sheraton, she naturally had the AC on, which had a leak that got all over my shelves. We discovered the leak 10 minutes before the cab was due to take us to the train station to wrap up our week in Taipei. We got the water cleaned up, but I spent two days worrying about damage and wondering if the water would keep leaking. It did not, thankfully, but when I got home Sunday to clean more and wash the wet towels before a maintenance worker came by, the temp in my apartment hovered around 28C/82F. Thankfully I had a fan to keep me from dying as I cleaned, and even MORE thankfully, the AC unit in my bedroom works, so I could sleep.
Anyway, I cried when I left my mom in Taipei yesterday because I was hot and overwhelmed and tired and had very minimal alone time for over a week, and also because I just really miss my mom, and it's easier to miss someone when they aren't so close, you know? I've only got two months and about 6 days left on this Taiwan adventure. I do hope to come back someday. I'd like to spend more time in the south part of the island. I didn't give Kaohsiung or Tainan enough attention, nor did I go to the beach or Sun Moon Lake. I still have some time, but I really have to save money since I won't get a paycheck for July and August, and I still have to book my flight home.
Anyway, here is a brief list of the cool things we got to see last week. If you're ever in Taipei, I recommend them all.
