Words Words Words
Nov. 13th, 2019 11:07 amSo I gave up on my NaNo goal to finish/significantly add to this novel I have been working on for a while. I've got the whole thing outlined, but I found as I wrote, I got super bored with the protagonist. And it's not her fault! I just can't muster up enough interest to flesh out her story, especially after outlining the thing.
I also got sick right away (schools are germ factories), and that sapped any remaining strength I had to give to this particular project.
However, I am trying to keep my goal of writing 500 words a day. I started a writing routine with Fictober (see my AO3 for those), and I really felt good producing things. I read somewhere that Terry Pratchett set a 400 word a day goal for himself, and he wrote some of the best things I've ever read. Slow and steady and all that. I've found that I can knock out 500-1000 words in about an hour or hour and a half. I walk to the Starbucks closest to my work and plonk down at a table and write. It's practically Pavlovian for me at this point, writing in Starbucks. No matter where I go, there's usually a Starbuck nearby. Heck, when I was in Seoul last year, I was sitting in one Starbucks and could look down across the street to another.
I didn't write any new fiction yesterday because I had meetings and work responsibilities. Plus, still sick, but over yesterday and today I wrote over 5,000 words -- sadly they were for student narratives which are attached to the kiddos' report cards. But that's finished, and I'm going to ignore the grading that's piling up for at least one more night. I'll head over to the SBUX and see what I can come up with.
