GYWO: February Reflection
Mar. 1st, 2020 11:49 amI don’t think I’ve posted about this, but this year I signed up for Get Your Words Out because a couple of my friends have promoted it and are mods/help out, so I figured I would take a plunge. I really like doing yearlong challenges. A couple years ago, I bought a day planner and challenged myself to write down one positive thing that happened each day. The small calendar boxes helped it feel less intimidating than a solid blank journal page. I’ve done temperature stitch-alongs, list challenges — something that helps me feel creative.
For GYWO, I chose to do the habit challenge — to write something for 240 days this year. I think that is the journeyman level. Anyway, January started out a little rocky, for a lot of reasons, and I wrote something on 20 of the 31 days. I found a groove in the middle of February (thanks, Untamed fandom!) and wrote something new on 25 of the 29 days (including an unbroken streak that started on February 14 — I hope I didn’t jinx myself).
I haven’t written anything original since probably November? I was beating myself up a little over it — shouldn’t I want to be a real writer? You know that line of nonsense. And then I decided, you know what? That is total nonsense. Writers write. That’s it. There’s no fixed amount to write, no type of thing you have to write, no required publishing to make you a writer. Also, I decided to steal my friend Cat’s motto for 2020 — choose joy — and the things I’m writing bring me a lot of joy, so that’s it. I’m going to write what makes me happy, hope that the things I put out for others to read might make them happy for a bit, and try to build stamina through this habit challenge.
