You know what's really great about wearing masks? I don't get sick much at all! Masks are no longer mandatory in Taiwan, except on public transport and in crowded places, but most people still wear them. I admit, I don't wear mine 100% of the time outside of the house, and once it gets hot and humid again, properly hot and humid, I probably won't wear it when I'm outside, like when I walk to Starbucks on my way to work in the morning. There is never anybody on the street. Most of my students still wear them. Many of the kids say they are scared to take them off, not just of getting sick but of showing their faces because it's still hard to be a teenager, and Taiwan is one of the more image-obsessed places I've lived. ANYWAY, that was just a little background on the current Situation here.

Because I have a cold. :( Something's been going around school because kids are germ factories. Several of the teachers were out with a nasty cold last week. I managed to keep it at bay until this weekend. Combined with some pretty lousy air quality, it's left me feeling scratchy-throated and sneezy. I guess I'm grateful that I feel pretty bad on the weekend so I don't have to worry about getting a sub (because that's the teacher's responsibility because I work in a Clown School), but the weather is turning warmer, and I think we're only going to have a few more weeks of pleasant warmth before life becomes a Swampy Misery for me.

Because I am sick, I am also extra homesick (although it's only 89 more days til summer vacation, and I have booked my tickets!!). I wasn't looking forward to mediocre pizza or yet more dumplings, but then I saw a new restaurant on Uber Eats -- an American BBQ restaurant!

Friends, I am not a great lover of BBQ. I'm actually not that fussed about food at all, for a lot of reasons, but I also don't want to eat something that tastes bad. And there's something about pulled pork and potato salad that is just so homey.

There was actually an American BBQ restaurant in Minsk. I only went once while I was living there. It was okay. The chef and owner had lived in America for a while. This restaurant is better. It's a little expensive, compared to other restaurants here, but it was very tasty. I got pulled pork, potato salad, and a dinner roll, and it was all very tasty. I'm going to order more tomorrow and have extra for Monday's lunch (the restaurant is only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). I'll make some mashed potatoes which will help stretch the pork. I might get some brisket and a side of the mac and cheese. They advertise beetroot coleslaw, but beet doesn't agree with me, and I mostly like coleslaw in theory, not practice. But it was a very nice taste of home.
