Taiwan Diary: Ms. Mayi
Sep. 16th, 2022 11:18 amLet me tell you about Ms. Mayi.
Ms. Mayi is another English teacher at my school. She has been teaching for FIFTY YEARS! She's taught so many places, from her home in the Philippines to Egypt, and now here in Taiwan.
Ms. Mayi is definitely the Staff Mom. She shares treats with people. She bought me a Starbucks mug as a welcome gift. She helps new teachers figure out lessons and resources. She has some of the best gossip. And yesterday, I learned that she is a hardcore ARMY!
Now, I am a fan of BTS, but I don't like to call myself ARMY. It feels weird to me. But I am easily lured by merch, I have most of the albums, and I have a definite bias (Suga).
Anyway, I was talking with another teacher, Johan, about my upcoming poetry unit and mentioned that I would allow the students to use song lyrics for one or two assignments, and Johan mentioned that Ms. Mayi is way into BTS.
I may have squealed.
Ms. Mayi's bias is Jin, and Suga is her bias-wrecker. She likes Jin because he has a good relationship with his mom and her own son only calls her when he wants something. She started listening to BTS after her husband died, and she credits their positivity with helping lift her out of her depression after her husband's death. Today she brought me a physical copy of their latest album. I don't even have a CD player, but I'm definitely going to buy one this week.
I love Ms. Mayi, and I'm so happy to have someone to fangirl over k-pop with.
